Our Week 11.11.22

Another week has zoomed by! We have been learning why some people choose to wear poppies at this time of year and have discussed why the 11th November is remembered in this country. We created our own poppy pictures too.

We enjoyed our trip to Shire Hall and learning about a VIctorian child called Harry Parker. We visited the courtroom and also the cells. Thank you to the adults who came with us on the trip, your time and support is greatly appreciated.

In maths we have continued using the column method to add one digit and 2 digit numbers. We have talked about ‘renaming’. We add the ‘ones’ first, and sometimes this makes a number more than 10. Here’s an example of how we’ve set it out in our books:

43 +8 =

First, we add the 3 ones and the 8 ones.

This makes 11 (so we’ve renamed the ones and made a new ten).

Then we add the four tens (from 40) and the one ten (from 11).

Sometimes we do not need to ‘rename because the ‘ones’ do not add up to make a number that is 10 or more like in this example:

In literacy, we have been thinking about diversity amongst people by looking at these characters from the book ‘Here we are’.

We have used verbs to describe what the people are doing and have used adjectives to describe what they are holding. We have tried to use two adjectives using a comma too. Here’s an example:

The musician is holding a tall, wooden instrument.

The chef is carefully cooking some tasty, green food with a hot, metal pan.

The musician is playing a large, wooden instrument.

Thank you for sharing your children’s home learning with us about the tin foil boats! The children shared their photos, pictures and boats with the class! This week, we’re thinking about different materials used for buildings.
